Q: H ow long have y o u been dean o f students, a n d w ha t is the role o f the dean a t Sa in t M ary’s? A: My title really isn't clean of stu ­ dents, it's dean of student affairs. I cam e to Saint Mary’s in August of 1976, so this is my fifth year. Dean of Student Affairs is a senior office posi­ tion so that I report directly to the president. There are eight different departm ents and each departm ent has a director. I am in charge of the division of student affairs. I have a very hroad job and of course dis­ cipline does fall Into the area o f stu ­ dent affairs. Q: A ll the eight departm en ts are in the d ivision o f s tu d en t affairs. What do these departm ents perta in to in aspect o f stu d en t affairs? A: This all pertains to the ex tra ­ curricular life o f the student. We know that a lot of educational o p ­ portunities exist outside of the class­ room. Most o f student life exists outside of the classroom. O ur main purpose as a division is to support the academ ic enterprise, nurture the spiritual developm ent o f the stu­ dents and to facilitate the grow th of the students in all areas for life We do that through the program s cam pus ministry offer. We learn a lot from students and hope vice versa. A lot of students view the dean of stu ­ dent affairs primarily as a judicial board and don 't realize there are all these o ther departm ents included. We see our roles as educators. One of our main institutional goals is to prepare young w om en to m eet the realities o f contem porary life. O ur division is based on principles of good decision making. Q: The adm in is tra tio n takes d is­ c ip linary action aga in st studen ts liv ing on-cam pus w ho break the rules. W hat a b o u t those liv ing offcam pus w ho break the rules? A: Off cam pus students are citizens o f the city Jof South Bend and certainly have to abide by the rules of the city, and the regulations of the apartm ent com plex in w hich they live. If the city rules are violated, the off-campus studejits have to face the justice system of th e city. Q: -4 s an approxim a tion , a bou t ho w often do y o u have to dea l w ith studen ts w ho break the rules? A: I personally do no t deal with students. The departm ent deals w ith these students' through the judicial system. We have three judicial boards on cam pus w hich deal w ith these students, because we feel that the rights of due process are p ro tected if we go through due process procedures. We have a
